First RIAGE Global Earthquake Workshop Held at UCL

The first RIAGE — (Re)Insurance-Academia Global Earthquake Workshop was held at University College London on 18–19 May 2026, bringing together academic researchers, engineers, policymakers, and insurance-sector experts.

Fatemeh Jalayer, ETRiS Coordinator and researcher at UCL Risk & Disaster Reduction, is one of the workshop co-chairs alongside Carmine Galasso and James Dalziel.

The workshop focused on recent developments in earthquake risk research and catastrophe modeling, with sessions covering time-dependent risk, cascading and compounding hazards, exposure and vulnerability modeling, new technologies in catastrophe risk management, and low-probability high-impact events.

Tsunami risk was also represented within the program through discussions on cascading earthquake impacts, including tsunamis and other secondary hazards. The workshop aimed to strengthen collaboration between academia and the (re)insurance sector and to support the development of more robust risk and resilience strategies.

She also contributed to the closing panel discussion, which brought together representatives from academia and the insurance industry to identify priorities for future RIAGE workshops.
